This American-Made Mid-Century Modern bookcase with secretary desk is by furniture maker Heywood-Wakefield. The model is M328 and was part of their Modern line that appeared during the 40s. It's contructed of solid maple wood newly finished in a rich dark stain with beautifully molded pulls. On the left side of the cabinet is a pull down secretary desk with organization shelf and three spacious drawers below. The right side of the cabinet hosts the bookcase with two height adjustable shelves. The recognizable Heywood-Wakefield eagle maker's mark is stamped inside one of the drawers. This nicely sized piece functions on multiple levels - bookcase, cabinet and desk with a neat streamlined appearance when closed. The desk dimensions are 29" w x 12" d x 28" ht.
Heywood-Wakefield was established in Massachusetts in 1826. It's most prominent period was between the 30s and 50s when the company began producing Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern designs. Their iconic designs coupled with their solid wood craftsmanship have made them an enduring force in the vintage mid-century modern world.
