This is a superb Klismos saber leg, round side table designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb, circa 1950s. What makes this walnut table so remarkable is its utilization of an ethereal, floating hoop stretcher that connects the four slender splayed saber legs creating an open architecture that allows the table to float beautifully in a room. The tabletop is wrapped in an exquisite crossbanded walnut veneer that highlights the premium, book-matched graining of the era. It is a beautiful example of Robsjohn-Gibbings' signature philosophy: taking the sweeping, dramatic elegance of ancient Greek Klismos forms and stripping away all unnecessary ornament to leave a clean, timeless modern silhouette. It seamlessly bridges classical antiquities and high-end Mid-Century Modernism.
